May 19th, 2018 MLB Betting Tips

A 1-1 record last night.

It took a bit longer than I expected, but the Seattle offense woke up and pushed that game into an over. It was 4-0 early for the Tigers and I kept waiting for them to erupt. They finally did as they scored five in the seventh and the game ended as an easy over. Walks will kill you as four of the five batters that scored for Seattle in that inning did not record a hit.

Sadly, that was not the case in Toronto as the Atheltics and Jays managed just 4 runs. Sometimes you just can’t go to the same bet two days in a row. This reminded me of another game we tipped a few weeks ago when there was a pitching change early and it made it a bullpen game. Brett Anderson went out for Oakland with an injury and the bullpen took over, having a great day in the process. I’d like to think a few more innings of Anderson would’ve meant a few more runs, but who knows.

Our other tips were messed up by weather and pitching changes. When I make a bet I always do it with the selected starters that I mention as “first pitch or no play”. That was the case in Atlanta last night.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Oakland Athletics Betting Tips:

Sam Gaviglio starts for the Jays and I am not much of a fan. Last year he had 4.36 ERA/5.81 FIP with two teams and almost no strikeouts. He’s upped his strikeouts in his relief appearances this year, but I don’t think that will bare out over a start. Especially one against an offense like Oakland’s.

Meanwhile, the Athletics send their ace Sean Manaea to the mound. He’s had his ups and downs since his no-hitter, but he has big strikeout stuff and the Jays continue to letdown against lefties. I think this line is way too low and will be taking the Athletics today.

Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves Betting Tips:

Okay, Sean Newcomb let’s try this again. The big lefty has put up some great numbers this year and now faces a Marlins offense that has just a .687 OPS against lefties. I like him to do good things here today.

The Braves offense has a .752 OPS against righties and faces Jose Urena today. Urena has been the nominal ace for the Marlins this year, but was tagged for three runs in his last start out against the Braves. With the Braves offense being so cold last night I am expecting big things from them here and I am going to be laying the runs.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Minnesota Twins Betting Tips:

The battle of the pitching prospects! Fernando Romero has been a savior for the Twins as he’s only allowed one earned run in three starts this season. He’s a power pitcher and the Brewers strikeout in nearly 25% of their plate appearances. With Ryan Braun joining Eric Thames on the disabled list, I am not totally enamored with their offense right now.

Freddy Peralta had a start for the ages as he struck out 13 in his debut against the Rockies. The Twins have just a .711 OPS against righites this year and I could see him getting some big time strikeouts again here.

A bit of a risk, but one I’m willing to take as I think there will be a lot of swing and miss today. Taking the under on this one.
